The Fountain Hospital

  • Built in 1893 in 8 weeks. Meant to hold 600 low grade mentally deficient patients.
  • Run by the Metropolitan Asylums Board ,the hospital was based in Tooting Grove SW17.
  • Annual cost per head £40.
  • Fountain Hospital carried out research into the causes and prevention of mental diseases. This was done under the direction of the Medical Officer of Health.
  • The hospital housed children over 3 years old. Girls stayed until 16 but boys over 9 went to Caterham.
  • Now the site is occupied by St. George’s Hospital a large university and medical institution
  • 1929 administration transferred to London County Council from MAB
  • Was damaged in the1940 Blitz
  • Osborne House in Hastings was constructed as a holiday home.
  • Additional Units were built for blind children with mental disabilities in Reigate
  • South Side House was built in Streatham for adults to train for industrial work with the aim of them returning to the community
  • The hospital was transferred to Queen Mary’s hospital in Carshalton in Surrey in 1944 after
  • A flying bomb (V1) destroyed a quarter of the site
