Scene painter’s model

Scene painter’s model of the Normansfield Theatre stage

Scale of half an inch to one foot. Made c. 1879 or earlier.

This model would be used to experiment with how scenery would actually look in the theatre.

A model would often be found in scene painters rooms or in a theatre where the actual scenery was being made. They were widely used and are still used today by set designers.

The model here is fitted with a backcloth, side flats and top borders. These are photographs taken in 2015 of the original 19th century woodland scenery which is held in the scenery collection.
